It is primarily a top sports event, which is known among the
marathon public as one of the most admirable and fastest tracks.
As in New York, Berlin or London, it is a very attractive city
marathon. Besides a classic marathon for top runners, the Prague
International Marathon also includes non-competitive runs for
nine and five kilometers for the broad public.
Karlovarské minerální vody and Prague International Marathon
companies joint together to organize the Sixth round of Mattoni
Junior Marathon Championship.
The Junior Marathon Championship is an idea conceived by PIM
Race Director and Olympic gold medallist Gelindo Bordin. The
JMC is a relay race in which students from all over the Czech
Republic run a portion of the full marathon, as part of a ten-member
team representing their school. The semi-finals of the JMC take
place in major cities throughout the Czech Republic and the
final race is run concurrently with the Prague International
Marathon, this year on 19 May.

Also this year (from May 21 to May 23), the Prague metropolis was crowded with thousands of runners, including the world’s top athletes. Apart from these evershining stars of marathon running, the race was also open to all of those who have never tried the 42,195 km track. This year's Prague International Marathon underwent a significant change –new race routes were introduced.
As the top running event in the CR, this year's marathon weekend full of sports and culture featured a number of non-competitive runs and races, e.g. the 8 km City Run for active athletes or the 4 km Family Run, in which especially parents with children may participate. The highlights of the weekend were the Prague International Marathon, the final race of the Mattoni Junior Marathon and the subsequent Big Marathon Party. The weekend was also accompanied by the traditional music festival that simultaneously takes place in the streets of the capital.

On Saturday March 27, the traditional Prague 1/2 Marathon took place in the centre of Prague. Again, this year it was well worth seeing –old track records were broken and new ones were made. The winner of the men's race was Joseph Ngeny Kiprotich from Kenya, who completed the 21,0975 kilometres long track in 1 hour 1 minute and 46 seconds, improving the previous maximum of Anthony Korir from 2001 by 23 seconds.
In the women's race, the victory was taken by Catherini Kirui, also from Kenya, debuting on this track in a time of 1 hour 10 minutes and 38 seconds and outclassing last year's performance of Slovenian Helena Javornik by 35 seconds. Among the Czech female athletes, the best time was achieved by Petra Kamínková, finishing sixth in the race with a time of 1 hour 14 minutes and 55 seconds. The Czech representative among the men, Pavel Faschingbauer, finished seventh, and the second native Czech marathon runner, Jana Klime‘ová, finished eighth.
The race was started precisely at noon on Charles Bridge by the President of the Czech Republic, Václav Klaus, along with Dana Zátopková. Prime Minister Vladimír Špidla and the Mayor of Prague, Pavel Bém, were also among the runners. The finish line of the race was at Kampa Island.

The Mattoni Junior run has been a part of the Prague International Marathon for the third year in a row already. It is a competition of mixed-sex teams of ten runners and formed by high school students, who run the whole marathon course as a relay.
The rules are simple: At least three girls have to be in each team, nine team members run 4 km tracks and the last member runs a 6,195 metre track.
Students from the Sports Secondary School from Pardubice celebrated their victory on Old Town Square in Prague, winning with a time of 2:31:44 hours and leaving behind runners from twenty-one other schools.
Thanks to the Mattoni Junior Marathon, one of these young promising runners will visit the famous New York Marathon in autumn. Gabriele Guzzo, the Commercial and Marketing Director of Carlsbad Mineral Waters, drew the winner, a runner from Zlín, in a lottery on Old Town Square in Prague.
