Canoe Mattoni once again entertains thousands of spectators
In mid-June, Karlovy Vary became the centre of attention not only for canoeists, but indeed for all people looking for a good time. The Eighth Annual Canoe Mattoni event was an opportunity to match exceptional sporting achievements with equally exceptional ones in the fine and the lively arts.
Starting on Wednesday, the programme was already full of excitement, with stellar white-water events alternating with leading popular musicians such as Jana Kirschner, Aneta Langerová, or the groups TataBojs and Support Lesbiens. Arriving for the international white-water championships were the world’s leading rowers, among them the Czech victors in the Canoeing World Cup, Michaela Strnadová and Kamil Mrůzek. “Unlike other water events, this has a truly exceptional setting. If we’re off somewhere in the forest, no spectators will show up. Here, it is a social event. I was really looking forward to it,” Strnadová said.
Watching from the banks and cheering them on were thousands of onlookers, among them both last years and this year’s Miss Czech Republic, Jana Doleželová and Lucie Králová, or television announcer Kateřina Kristelová. The latter two individuals also took an active role in Canoe Mattoni: as members of the jury for the Mattoni Water Carnival, they assisted in selecting the best of the non-traditional river-craft in the Sunday afternoon competition. The winner was the crew of the boat Polystars, depicting legendary Czech pop stars with Karel Gott at the bow. For their spectacular show, the victors were granted the grand prize of 200,000 CZK.
